I think it’s so important to be a good listener. That’s what our moms taught us right? Still it’s so very hard to do when you have ideas and thoughts you want to say LOL. But here’s the deal ya’ll. I have learned my lesson when it comes to design and my kiddos and listening.
I remember when I was pregnant with Mia 14 years ago, and the insane amount of time and effort I put into designing her perfect “hot pink and lime green” PotteryBarn nursery (apparently neutral wasn’t a THING 14 years ago). Everything had to be perfect, because you know, newborn babies really care what their room looks like (insert eye roll emoji).
And then Mia grew into a cute, spunky and opinionated toddler who wanted a Dora bedroom. Of course this could never happen, because they didn’t sell Dora in Potterbarn Kids, and I could never have tacky in my home (insert girl slapping herself in the face emjoi).
Over the next few years Mia and I spend a lot of wasted time trying to compromise on her room. Why I just didn’t give in and let her imagination run wild I don’t know, and it is a mom regret I have for sure. We were constantly redecorating to create a space that was “her,” but my listening skills kept getting in the way.
Fast forward a few years, and I am officially releasing control and LISTENING to my daughter. What a concept LOL. Also the 4 younger kiddos sure got lucky, because I figured this out on their older sibling’s watch.
Mia has this super power where she can read all day everyday. She loves it. I have to make her STOP reading to eat and shower. And so when we moved into our new house I wanted a space that she could relax and read those books in. A space that allowed her to use her creativity, and looked like “Mia” instead of “mom.”
I think she has read Harry Potter, the entire series 10 times. I’m not kidding. So it seemed only fitting that she would want to fill her walls with the pages of the book, and that’s exactly what we did.
I can’t take credit for this space. It’s all Mia, and I’m crazy proud of her and excited to share it with you. 🙂
